  1. Read to your child daily. Read many different types of book.  (Very important!)
  2. Keep good and entertaining reading material in almost every room of the house.
  3. Take your child to the library weekly.
  4. Set a limit on the amount of time your child is allowed to watch television.
  5. Subscribe to a children’s magazine.
  6. Reward your child with a new book and extra reading time.
  7. Show an interest in reading by reading yourself. You are their best model.
  8. Encourage different types of reading. Cook with your child and have them read the recipe.  In a restaurant, encourage your child to read the menu.  While traveling, ask your child to read the road signs.
  9. Encourage your child to read to you. Let them tell you the story by “reading the pictures”.
  10. “Echo read” the poems and books from school. Point to each word of a line, read it, and then let your child read the line to you. Encourage them to try pointing to the words.

Reading should be an enjoyable experience for you and your child!
