Ways to Encourage Reading

1. Read to your child daily and have them read to you.  Read many different types of books.  (Very important!)
2. Keep good and entertaining reading material in almost every room of the house.
3. Take your child to the library weekly.
4. Set a limit on the amount of time your child is allowed to watch television and on screen time.
5. Subscribe to a children’s magazine.
6. Reward your child with a new book and extra reading time.
7. Show an interest in reading by reading yourself.  You are their best model.
8. Encourage different types of reading.  Cook with your child and have them read the recipe.  In a restaurant, encourage your child to read the menu.  While traveling, ask your child to read the road signs.

 Reading should be an enjoyable experience for you and your child!
