RFISD Parent Update - March 16, 2020

At this time, we have no information about a possible extension of the closure but are following all guidance from the Texas Education Agency, the Centers for Disease Control, State Health Agencies, and JBSA.

Many of you have asked about whether the days missed will need to be made up. At this time, we are receiving guidance on that matter. We plan to use what measures the Texas Education Agency will be allowing school districts due to the widespread nature of this event.

We know another concern for many is the impact that missed school days may have on student performance on the STAAR exam. School districts were notified by the Commissioner of Education this morning that STAAR exams are being waived for this year.

In the event that this closure extends beyond March 20, our teachers will be preparing lessons that they will be able to deliver remotely. We will work diligently to ensure that we continue to provide meaningful learning to our students no matter the circumstances.

Finally, your children may be worried about COVID-19. It is understandable that they have questions. We have researched a few sites that might help you as you discuss this with your children. The CDC offers the following resource https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schools-childcare/talking-with-children.html. In addition, the National Association of School Nurses offers the following resource https://higherlogicdownload.s3.amazonaws.com/NASN/3870c72d-fff9-4ed7-833f-215de278d256/UploadedImages/PDFs/02292020_NASP_NASN_COVID-19_parent_handout.pdf.

We will continue to keep you informed and let you know of any new developments through email notifications, social media and our website.

Sincerely,

Susan Bendele
Interim Superintendent
