Daily 5 & Cafe

Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new school year! I hope you had a wonderful summer and enjoyed spending quality time with your child. I will be introducing classroom routines and structure in a way that removes all the guesswork from the child and allows them to concentrate fully on learning. In reading, the classroom structure I use is called Daily 5. Kindergarteners at Randolph are familiar with Daily 5.

The Daily 5 is a literacy structure that teaches independence and gives children the skills needed to create a lifetime love of reading and writing. It consists of five tasks. We discuss what the tasks look like, sound like, and feel like to engage in the tasks independently. The children will work on their stamina until they are successful at being independent while doing the tasks.

The five tasks are:

  • Read to Self
  • Work on Writing
  • Read to Someone
  • Listen to Reading
  • Word Work

The main components of our reading curriculum are:

  • Comprehension and Strategy Work
  • Accuracy (decoding, sight words)
  • Fluency (reading speed, etc.)
  • Vocabulary

While the children are engaged in these activities, I am able to work with small groups and individual children. This structure is effective, the results are amazing, and the children look forward to Daily 5. We will use a similar structure for math. We also use a workshop model for a daily whole group writing time.

You can find all of the learning targets for first grade by googling “First Grade Texas TEKS”.

I am looking forward to a great year!
